Ministry of Commerce & Industry Clarifies Disposal of 2,750 Cartons of Rotten Frozen Chicken and Reaffirms Commitment to Consumer Protection.
𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐚, 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 – 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – The Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MOCI) wishes to inform the general public and correct the misleading information circulating on social and traditional media regarding the recent destruction of rotten frozen chicken confiscated from 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞.
The Ministry inform the public that 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝟐,𝟕𝟓𝟎 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 were confiscated, condemned, and disposed of on 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟏𝟖, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, under the inspectorate team of the Ministry and relevant government authorities in accordance with established public health and consumer protection procedures.
Contrary to reports alleging that only 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐲 (𝟒𝟎) 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 were destroyed, the Ministry emphasizes that such information is 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞, 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠.
The disposal exercise involved the full quantity of 𝟐,𝟕𝟓𝟎 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬, all of which were deemed unsafe for human consumption after inspection.
The Ministry remains committed to its statutory responsibility to protect consumers from hazardous, expired, adulterated, and substandard products. The successful interception and destruction of these contaminated frozen chicken products demonstrate the Government of Liberia's unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health, preserving consumer confidence, and ensuring that only safe and quality products are available on the Liberian market.
The Ministry further warns all importers, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers that the importation, storage, or sale of products unfit for human consumption constitutes a violation of Liberia's trade and consumer protection laws. Businesses found engaging in such practices will be subject to the full force of the law, including seizure of goods, administrative sanctions, and other legal measures where applicable.
The Ministry also expresses appreciation to all government institutions and stakeholders who collaborated during the inspection, confiscation, and disposal process. Such inter-agency cooperation remains essential to maintaining a safe, fair, and competitive marketplace.
