Commerce Ministry Halts Plans To Increase Cement Price
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoCI) has, with immediate effect, halted a proposed price increase by cement producers on the Liberian market.
The Ministry took the decision on Thursday, July 3, 2025, during a meeting with major cement producers.
The meeting followed the circulation of a notice and a formal communication addressed to the Ministry. In the communication, they proposed that the the price of CEM II 32.5R be increased to USD$7.75 per bag, and CEM I 42.5R/N, USD$8.35 per bag, effective July 7, 2025.
The proposed price adjustment was jointly singed by four leading cement companies: CEMENCO, Star Cement, Fouta Cement Corporation Cement, and Power Cement.
The producers cited what they call rising costs of raw materials and increasing maritime transport expenses as primary reasons for the planned hike in the price of the commodity.
However, Commerce & industry Minister, Magdalene Dagoseh stated that no upward adjustment in the price of cement would be permitted until the Ministry conducts a thorough investigation into the justification provided by the cement producers.
“The investigation will allow us to assess the validity of the claims made regarding unfavorable economic factors,” Minister Dagoseh said.
She called on the produces to remain patient as the Ministry carries out its review, at the end of which an appropriate decision will be made.
The Ministry remains committed to protecting consumers while ensuring a fair and competitive market environment for Liberia.
